Headstone Care

A properly crafted headstone, securely installed, can remain beautiful for many years. At the same time, caring for a memorial requires a few simple guidelines:

  • Avoid washing granite headstones with large amounts of water. Excess water can rinse out the filler and leave white marks after drying. Instead, wipe the surface with a damp cloth, then gently buff with a soft, dry cloth. This helps preserve the polish and prevents damage to the stone.

  • Use only 24-hour memorial candles (ner neshama). This is important: candles placed on a headstone can sometimes cause damage. Small candles often melt into liquid wax that spills onto the candle holder or the stone. Over time, this may lead to overheating and surface cracking. A large ner neshama typically does not liquefy in the same way; the wax evaporates gradually and is far less likely to harm the stone.
Even so, do not light a large number of candles at once. There have been cases where families lit 15–20 memorial candles, causing excessive heat and cracks. Israel’s climate is often hot, and additional heat from multiple candles can be harmful. Gabro Sela produces specialized candle holders designed to safely accommodate multiple candles.

  • Do not wash a headstone with cold water on hot days. Sudden temperature changes can cause fine micro-cracks.

  • Never use oily cloths or chemical cleaning agents. These can stain or damage the stone.

  • If you notice any issue, consult a professional.
